Sphinx Summer
The metal **sphinx** statue by the community pool had been Maya's safe haven since middle school. Lichen-spotted wings, missing half its nose — it was perfect for cryptic late-night texts about crush disasters and social anxiety spirals.
Until this summer, when she caught her ex-best-friend Chloe draped dramatically across the sphinx's concrete back, manicured feet dangling, laughing with baseball-guy Tyler.
"Seriously?" Maya whispered, ducking behind the snack stand. "You pick MY sphinx?"
The **water** in the pool sparkled obnoxiously. Maya's neon volleyball jersey — Rookie mistake, wearing her middle school colors to the first high school party — suddenly felt radioactive.
"Hey, Maya!" Tyler waved, walking over in his cleats (who wore cleats to a pool party? Baseball guys, apparently). "Chloe said you know everything about..." he lowered his voice, "the sphinx? Like, why it's here?"
Maya blinked. "It's been here since the 90s. Some rich guy's weird art installation."
"See?" Chloe grinned from the sphinx's back. "I told you she's basically an expert."
They wanted to know about the sphinx? Not why they'd stopped being friends freshman year? Not why Chloe had iced her out for the popular crowd?
"There's supposed to be a time capsule under it," Maya found herself saying. "But honestly, I think it's just a rumor people started to seem interesting."
"DUDE." Tyler's eyes went wide. "That's SO metal."
Chloe slid off the sphinx, landing in her perfect white sandals. "Remember when we tried to dig for it with spoons in seventh grade?"
Maya's throat tightened. "And my mom yelled at us for 'destroying public art'?"
"You laughed so hard you snorted Gatorade," Chloe said softly.
The air between them shifted, like humidity breaking after rain.
"I still have the spoons," Maya admitted.
Chloe's smile transformed — not the polite popular-girl smile, but HER smile, lopsided and genuine. "Tyler plays **baseball**," she said, like that explained everything. "We were gonna ask if you wanted to watch his game Friday. Unless you have... plans?"
Maya looked from Chloe's hopeful expression to Tyler's awkward shrug to the dumb metal sphinx that held literally all her middle school secrets.
"I'm free," she said. "But I'm bringing my own spoon."
