Sphinx Summer

The polyester sphinx costume smelled like every minimum wage job I'd ever had—stale popcorn and desperation. I'd been running late for my third shift at Pharaoh's Paradise, the kind of place that thinks hot pink hieroglyphics count as authentic Egyptian decor.

"You're up," Marcus said, barely looking up from his phone. His emoji usage in the group chat had evolved from basic smiley faces to full-on roasting me in our mutual stories. Classic.

The AC was dead again. In July. In Florida. I was literally swimming in my own sweat under twenty pounds of fake fur while eighth graders threw golf balls at my head.

Then she walked in.

Maya. From third period art. The one who'd caught me staring at her sketchbook exactly twice too many times. She was working the counter now, neon " hieroglyphs " painted across her cheekbones. Living, breathing cringe energy, but somehow she made it look intentional.

Break time couldn't come fast enough. I peeled off the sphinx head and collapsed on the break room couch, craving anything that didn't taste like humidity and embarrassment.

"Try this."

I jumped. Maya was standing there, holding out a plastic container. "It's papaya. My mom's obsessed with farmers markets now."

The first bite hit my tongue—bright, unexpected, like sunshine had materialized in the break room. Not trying too hard, just existing in its own papaya-ness.

"It's... actually good?" I said, and immediately wanted to die. Smooth. Real smooth.

Maya laughed, and something in my chest did that terrifying flippy thing. "Your sphinx face is way better than mine was last week. I looked like a confused cat."

We talked until Marcus's text lit up my phone—screaming capslock, something about a mini-golf emergency and running back to work NOW.

"See you tomorrow, sphinx boy," Maya said, and the way she said it made me think maybe, just maybe, she didn't hate it.

Some days are just swimming through awkward until you find the weird, sweet moments that make it worth it. And sometimes those moments taste like papaya and smell like polyester sphinx costumes.
