Sphinx Salad Summer

Maya's summer job at the community pool seemed chill enough until the Egyptian theme party happened. The owners had decided to install a giant fiberglass sphinx statue right by the deep end—which was already giving major ancient-energy vibes.

"You're working the salad station," her manager said, completely ignoring Maya's request for DJ duty.

The salad bar. Because nothing says pool party like croutons and **spinach**.

By 7 PM, the party was in full swing. Maya spotted Ethan from her history class, the one whose smile made her stomach do that weird fluttery thing. He was hanging out by the **pool**, looking unfairly good in swim trunks.

She was debating whether to say hey when she noticed something. All the cool kids were **swimming** out to the deep end, touching the sphinx statue, and swimming back. Some kind of challenge.

"You gonna do it?" Ethan asked, suddenly beside her. He smelled like chlorine and coconut sunscreen.

"I, uh—" Maya's brain short-circuited.

"It's just a statue, right?"

He grabbed her hand and they dove in. The water felt electric, like the atmosphere before a **lightning** strike. Her heart raced as they swam toward the sphinx, its stone face unreadable in the twilight.

They reached it together, hands touching the rough fiberglass at the same moment. Something shifted inside her—not magic, just the realization that she was actually doing this. Being spontaneous. Living.

They swam back, breathless and laughing. Maya noticed Ethan had green stuff stuck in his teeth.

"You got a little—" she pointed.

"What?" He grinned. "Oh my god, is that **spinach**?"

"From earlier," she laughed. "We matched."

He grinned wider. "Wanna get actual food that isn't salad?"

"Absolutely."

Later, when the real storm hit and they were huddled under the snack bar umbrella sharing stolen fries, Maya decided this might actually be the best summer ever. Weird sphinx statue and all.
