Sphinx Papaya Apocalypse

Maya stood in the corner of Jordan's basement, feeling like a total sphinx—mysterious, silent, and honestly kind of ancient. The Egyptian-themed party had been Jordan's idea (his parents are archaeologists or something cool like that), but the papier-mâché sphinx head looming near the snack table was giving her major creep vibes.

"You look like a zombie," said Kai, sliding up beside her. "Rough week?"

"Rough life," Maya muttered, adjusting her oversized flannel. "AP Bio is absolutely killing me. Plus my mom decided we're doing this 'clean eating' thing, so goodbye everything delicious, hello papaya and spinach smoothies for breakfast."

Kai winced. "That sounds actual torture."

"It's worse. She bought a CASE of papayas. Who does that? They sit there on the counter judging me."

Before Kai could respond, a flash of fur bolted past them—Jordan's golden retriever, Buster, wearing a tiny pharaoh headdress. The dog skidded across the polished floor, straight toward the pyramid of red Solo cups.

"BUSTER, NO!" Jordan yelled from across the room.

Too late. Cups flew everywhere. Spinach dip (Maya should've known it was too good to last) splattered across the sphinx's papier-mâché face like green slime.

The room went dead silent for exactly three seconds. Then everyone lost it.

Maya found herself laughing so hard her sides hurt. Kai was wheezing. Even Jordan, despite the disaster, was grinning as he ran for paper towels.

"Okay," Kai said, wiping actual tears from his eyes. "That was iconic."

"Yeah," Maya said, surprising herself. "Yeah, it kinda was."

Buster sat proudly among the wreckage, tail thumping, completely unbothered. And somehow, in the middle of all the chaos, Maya realized she wasn't sphinx-mode anymore. She was just... there. Part of it. Not on the outside looking in, but actually IN the room, laughing like a normal person.

Maybe the smoothie situation wouldn't kill her. Maybe AP Bio wouldn't actually destroy her entire future. And maybe high school wasn't one long zombie apocalypse after all.

"Want to help me rescue the papaya bowls from the kitchen?" Jordan called. "My mom made them, they're actually pretty good."

Maya glanced at Kai, who shrugged. "Might as well. Can't be worse than spinach dip sphinx."

"True that." Maya headed toward the kitchen, feeling something warm and unfamiliar blooming in her chest. Hope? Belonging? Whatever it was, she decided, it wasn't so bad after all.
