Sphinx on the Padel Court

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could barely grip her racquet. First padel tournament of the season, and naturally, her parents had invited the entire extended family. Plus Tyler, who'd been giving her mixed signals all month at school.

"You good, Maya?" Jordan asked, bouncing on balls of feet beside her. Jordan, whose dog had just had puppies and wouldn't shut up about them. Jordan, who didn't seem to understand that losing this match meant losing more than just a game — it meant losing face in front of Tyler.

"Yeah. Just... vibes are off." Maya adjusted her visor for the tenth time.

Their opponents walked onto the court. The girl, some transfer student named Raven, had this sphinx-like quality — unreadable expression, dark eyes that seemed to see everything. She moved with weird grace, like she'd been playing padel since birth. Her partner was this beefy guy with a bear tattooed on his forearm, bouncing a ball like he owned the place.

"Game on," the ref called.

First point: Maya served directly into the net. Her stomach dropped. Tyler was literally sitting courtside, probably judging her entire existence right now.

Second point: Jordan saved it with a sick volley that hit the glass wall at the perfect angle. But Raven returned it like it was nothing. Sphinx girl didn't even blink.

By the third game, Maya's overthinking was at peak levels. What if she'd chosen a different elective this year? What if she'd actually responded to Tyler's text last night instead of leaving him on read? What if —

"Maya, focus!" Jordan hissed.

Raven served. The ball came at Maya fast, and something clicked. Maybe it was the way Raven held herself, that same unbothered energy Maya's older sister had whenever Maya was being dramatic. Maya realized: nobody actually cared that much. Not really. Tyler was probably just scrolling TikTok. Her parents would be proud regardless. And sphinx girl? Just another teenager trying to win a match.

Maya hit the ball back. Hard. It ricocheted off the side wall, catching bear-tattoo guy completely off guard.

"YESSS!" Jordan screamed.

They lost the match anyway. But as Maya walked off the court, Tyler actually smiled and gave her a small nod. And Jordan, ride-or-die that she was, said, "Wanna come over? The puppies are finally old enough to play."

Maya wiped her sweaty palms on her shorts and grinned. "Bet."
