Sphinx on the Court
Maya dragged herself through the hallway, moving full **zombie** mode after staying up till 3 AM doomscrolling. First week at Northwood Academy and she was already convinced she'd never find her people. Everyone seemed so polished, so sure of themselves, while she was still figuring out which cafeteria table wouldn't get her socially executed.
"You coming to **padel** practice?" asked Chloe, the senior who'd somehow decided to take Maya under her wing. "Coach says if you want to make the team, you gotta show up today."
Padel. Maya had never even held a racquet until Chloe handed her one two days ago. But something about Chloe's effortless confidence made Maya want to try, even though she felt like a fraud.
The **cable** snapped in the equipment room as Maya was grabbing a helmet. The net came crashing down, and suddenly the entire team was staring at her.
"My bad," she mumbled, face burning. This was it. The moment she proved she didn't belong.
But then Chloe was there, helping her up. "Happens to everyone. Here, help me fix it."
As they worked, Chloe opened up. "First week here, I spilled an entire coffee on the **sphinx** statue in the courtyard. Thought they'd expel me."
Maya blinked. "There's a sphinx?"
"Ancient thing, covered in moss. Nobody really notices it anymore." Chloe grinned. "Kinda like how nobody notices the weird kid until they do something memorable."
"Thanks for calling me weird," Maya shot back, but she was smiling.
"Honestly? Weird's good. Normal's boring." Chloe bumped her shoulder. "You gonna **bear** with us through the season? We need someone who's not afraid to look messy sometimes."
That night, Maya texted her best friend from her old school: *I think I might survive this.* And for the first time, she actually believed it.
