Sphinx on the Court
Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking. padel tryouts. Sophomore year. And literally everyone was watching.
"You got this," Chloe whispered, squeezing her shoulder. "You've been practicing forever."
Maya nodded, trying to ignore the knot in her stomach. She'd spent all summer serving against her garage wall, her cat Luna watching lazily from the windowsill like she was judging Maya's form. Which, honestly, she probably was. Luna was a sphinx in disguise—all mysterious and judgy, like she knew secrets about the universe but wasn't sharing.
The varsity captain, Brianna, stood near the net with her arms crossed. Brianna was gorgeous, confident, had perfect hair, and apparently zero nerves. Total package. Meanwhile, Maya was just... trying not to embarrass herself in front of half the school.
"Number 23," Coach Martinez called. "You're up."
Maya stepped onto the court, her heart doing that weird flutter thing. She could feel everyone's eyes. This was fine. Everything was fine.
Her first serve went into the net. Some people giggled. Great.
"Reset," Coach said. "Again."
Maya bounced the ball, focused on the sweet spot of her racquet. Just like practicing at home with Luna judging from the window. Just like that time she'd played against her dad and actually won. She could do this.
She served. It sailed perfectly, landing right in the corner. Yes.
But then came the volley drill, and Maya's brain decided to take a vacation. She missed two easy shots, tripped over her own feet, and nearly faceplanted. Humiliation level: maximum.
After tryouts, Maya sat on the bench, staring at her shoes. Chloe sat beside her, but Maya couldn't even look at her. She'd bombed. Hard.
"Maya?"
She looked up. Brianna. The sphinx herself, looking all perfect and effortless.
"You've got serious power," Brianna said, dropping onto the bench beside her. "But you're thinking too much. Like, way too much."
Maya blinked. "I... what?"
"I saw you practicing at the park last week," Brianna continued. "You were serving against the wall, talking to yourself. And honestly? Your form was better then. You were just... playing."
Maya felt her face burn. She'd been caught. Practicing. Talking to herself. The trifecta of lame.
"But today," Brianna added, "you were trying so hard to be perfect that you forgot how to just hit the damn ball."
Brianna stood up, slinging her bag over her shoulder. " JV needs players who actually show up. Plus, my cat's been watching your TikToks and thinks you're cool. She's very particular about these things."
She winked and walked away.
Maya sat there for a moment, processing. Then she started laughing. She couldn't help it. Brianna's cat. A sphinx cat, probably. Judging her TikToks.
Chloe appeared from nowhere, grinning. "So... does this mean you made it?"
"I think," Maya said, "I just got invited to join the JV team by the varsity captain's cat."
"That's the most you thing that's ever happened."
Maya's phone buzzed. A follow request: @brianna.wilson. And a DM: "Luna says your serve needs work but your vibes are immaculate. Welcome to the team."
Some sphinxes, Maya realized, didn't ask riddles. They just invited you to play.
