Sphinx on the Court

Maya's rescue dog Barnaby pressed his wet nose against her hand as she sat cross-legged on her bed, phone clutched in the other. The charging cable dangled precariously, its wire exposed from too many nights of twisting and turning while waiting for texts that never came.

"Who needs them anyway, buddy?" she whispered, scratching behind his ears. Barnaby thumped his tail in response, his unconditional friendship the only thing keeping her together since moving to this suburb three weeks ago.

At school the next day, she spotted them—her former squad, laughing at the padel courts. Padel had exploded at Northwood High, and of course they'd all claimed the best courts during lunch. Maya watched from a distance, her ancient sphinx of a cat back home offering more warmth than these people ever had.

"Hey!" A girl with wild curly waves waved from court three. "We need a fourth—you play?"

Maya hesitated. The old Maya would've panicked about making a fool of herself. The new Maya, the one who'd survived friend betrayals and awkward cafeteria lunches, just grabbed a borrowed racket.

"Not really, but I learn fast."

"I'm Priya. This is Leo and Sam. We suck, so you'll fit right in."

Something shifted on that court. Maybe it was the satisfying pop of the ball against the glass walls. Maybe it was how Leo's laugh sounded genuine, not performative. Or maybe it was the way Priya high-fived her after every point, even the terrible ones.

Her phone buzzed in her backpack. Probably her mom checking in. But later, when she finally checked, a text from an unknown number lit up the screen: "This is Priya from padel! Same time tomorrow? We're doing a tournament next month if you're interested."

That night, Barnaby greeted her with full-body wags. Maya curled the fraying cable around her phone charger and grinned. Sometimes the riddle wasn't about fitting in—it was about finding where you actually belonged.
