Sphinx of the Sunset Courts

Maya's **cat**, Barnaby, gave her that look. The one that said, *You're doing too much again.* He was right — she'd spent forty minutes on her eyeliner alone.

"You good, fam?" her little brother called from the hallway. "You look lowkey stressed."

"I'm fine," Maya lied, grabbing her racket. Today was **padel** tryouts at the rec center, and if she didn't make the team, she'd spend another semester watching TikToks in the library while everyone else lived their best lives.

The courts smelled like rubber and **orange** Gatorade — that specific combination that screamed *athletic teens trying too hard*. Her stomach did nervous little flips.

And then she saw her.

The girl sat alone on the bleachers, knees pulled to her chest, watching everything and nothing at once. She had this unreadable expression, like some ancient **sphinx** guarding secrets Maya couldn't even guess at. Lena. They'd shared English twice now, and Maya had never worked up the courage to say anything beyond *nice presentation* during group projects.

Lena's eyes locked with hers. A heartbeat of recognition, maybe something more.

"You trying out?" Lena asked, sliding down from her perch.

"Yeah, but I'm probably gonna flop," Maya admitted, surprised by her own honesty. "I've been running on three hours of sleep and an iced coffee. Feeling like a total **zombie** out here."

Lena's mouth curved into something soft and real. "Same honestly. Junior year is actually cooking me."

They stood there in the sticky heat, two zombies orbiting each other's exhaustion, and something shifted. The sphinx had descended from her pedestal.

"Wanna warm up together?" Lena asked, and it wasn't just an invitation — it was a lifeline.

Barnaby would be proud. Maya had finally stopped overthinking and just... showed up.

"Yeah," she said, and for the first time all week, she didn't feel like performing. "Yeah, let's do it."
