Sphinx of the Summer
Maya's palms were literally sweating through her shorts as she stood at the community center, clutching the crumpled flyer. "Beginner Padel Tournament" – whatever that was. Some tennis-paddle hybrid that the cool kids were obsessed with this summer.
"You playing?" The voice belonged to Chloe, who somehow looked effortless in her crop top even in July heat.
Maya's throat went dry. She needed water like, yesterday. "Maybe? I don't even know the rules."
Chloe laughed. "No one does. It's fine. Just don't be like Jake last week – he acted like a total sphinx, all mysterious and brooding, then tripped over his own racket."
A sphinx. Maya rolled that around. Mysterious. Silent. Riddles without answers. That's basically what her crush on Tyler had been all spring – her own personal sphinx situation. Tyler, who was currently walking toward them with his dumb perfect hair.
"What's up?" Tyler fist-bumped Chloe like it was the most natural thing in the world. Maya felt like she was underwater, everything muffled and weird.
"Maya's doing the padel thing," Chloe announced. Maya's palms were somehow sweatier.
"Nice." Tyler grinned, and Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organ function. "My cousin owns that bear mascot costume they use for the youth camp. If you need a hype man, I could hook you up."
A bear costume. Because that's exactly what this situation needed – more absurdity.
"Sure," Maya heard herself say. "Because nothing says 'serious athlete' like a bear cheering from the sidelines."
Chloe snorted. Tyler's smile did that crinkly thing by his eyes. And for the first time, Maya's palms weren't sweating because she was nervous – they were sweating because she was actually excited.
The tournament could wait. For now, she was just Maya: sphinx-solver, padel disaster, bear-hype-magnet-in-training. And honestly? That was enough.
