Sphinx of the Dugout
Leo adjusted his baseball cap, trying to look casual despite the fact that his hands were shaking. Behind him, the school mascot costume — a golden sphinx with way too much eyeliner — stared judgmentally from the equipment bench. Why had he agreed to wear it for tonight's game? Oh right, because Maya had asked.
"You good, Leo?" Sam asked, slapping him on the back. "You look like you're about to pass out."
"Totally chill," Leo lied, ignoring how his voice cracked. "Just vibing."
The dugout smelled like dirt, sweat, and something suspiciously like old spinach. Coach had been pushing his new "spinach smoothie regimen" on everyone, claiming it was the ultimate performance vitamin. So far, the only thing Leo had gained from it was green teeth and a reputation for having the worst burps on the team.
Maya appeared at the dugout fence, her phone in hand. "Leo! You need to post something with the sphinx head. It's gonna go viral, I swear."
"Um, maybe later?" Leo stammered. His crush on Maya was about as subtle as a tornado in a library. Every time she looked at him, his brain turned to static.
Sam nudged him. "Bro, just do it. What's the worst that could happen?"
Famous last words.
The sphinx head slipped. Leo's jersey caught on the costume's zipper. In seconds, he was tangled in gold fabric, the sphinx mask somewhere near his knees, and his lucky spinach-green smoothie stain on full display. The entire team stared. Maya was filming.
"Wait," Leo said, his face burning. "Let me explain."
But then Sam burst out laughing, and somehow it was okay. "Dude," Sam said, "you look like a sphinx that got hit by a vegetable truck. Best day ever."
Maya was laughing too, but not in a mean way. She jumped the fence and extended a hand. "Here, sphinx boy. Let me help you."
As they untangled him from the costume, Leo realized something: sometimes the most embarrassing moments became the best stories. And maybe that was enough.
"Still friends?" he asked, sheepish.
"Definitely," Maya said, grinning. "But you're wearing the sphinx head for the team photo."
Leo groaned, but for the first time all night, he wasn't faking it when he smiled.
