Sphinx in the Shadows

sphinxcatpool

The bar's sphinx-like owner, Vera, sat in her corner booth, inscrutable as ever. She saw everything—every betrayed confidence, every fumbled seduction—yet revealed nothing. Her eyes tracked my approach.

"You're leaving the firm," she stated, not asked. It wasn't common knowledge yet.

"Word travels."

"You make too much noise." Vera's cat, a mangy tom that patrolled the bar like he owned it, jumped onto her lap. She stroked him absently. "Real professionals disappear quietly."

I'd spent three years climbing through the company's ranks, each promotion another step away from the person I used to be. The money was good. The compromises accumulated like silt at the bottom of a pool—murky, suffocating, impossible to ignore.

"Is there another way?" I asked, gesturing at her cat. "Not everyone can just... walk away."

Vera's smile was sharp. "You think I walked away? I burned three bridges on my way out. Some people still want me dead." She scratched behind the cat's ears. "But here we are."

"And here I am."

"So you are." She poured two fingers of whiskey. "The question is: who are you becoming?"

The cat purred, a rumble like distant thunder. Outside, rain began to fall, blurring the city lights through rain-streaked windows.

I took the glass. "I don't know yet."

"Better than thinking you do." Vera raised her own glass. "To whatever comes next."

We drank in silence. Her cat watched us both, eyes like old coins. Somewhere beyond the windows, the city kept turning, indifferent to our small rebellions against its machinery. But for tonight, that was enough.
