Sphinx in the Palms

Mateo's summer job at the country club was supposed to be easy—watching the front desk, occasionally answering phones, definitely not crushing on the girl who played padel every Tuesday and Thursday. But there she was, Serena, with her perfect backhand and her dad's expensive membership, completely out of his league.

The papaya incident didn't help. His abuela had packed him fresh fruit from her garden—"para tu almuerzo, mijo"—and the smell had wafted through the entire clubhouse during Serena's championship match. Everyone stared. Serena's teammates giggled. Mateo had wanted to dissolve into the carpet.

"Dude, that's rough," his coworker Javier said, slumping in the chair beside him. "But hey, at least you're not like her."

He pointed to where Serena sat alone on a bench near the palm trees, head in her hands. Even from a distance, she looked miserable.

"What's her deal?" Mateo asked, trying to sound casual.

"Her parents are getting divorced. She found out yesterday." Javier shrugged. "She's like this sphinx now—won't talk to anyone, just disappears after matches."

Mateo stared. He'd assumed Serena's life was perfect—private schools, vacations, parents who actually stayed together. He knew that feeling: everyone expecting you to be fine when you're falling apart inside. After his dad left last year, he'd spent months pretending everything was normal.

Without thinking, Mateo grabbed the remaining papaya from his lunchbox and walked outside.

Serena looked up, startled, when he sat beside her. "You're the papaya guy."

"Mateo," he said. "And yeah. Sorry about that."

She almost smiled. "It actually smelled kind of nice. My mom never buys fresh fruit—too messy, she says." Her voice cracked. "Everything's too messy now."

Mateo held out the papaya. "My abuela says these are for healing. She's probably lying, but..."

Serena took it. "Thanks." She paused. "You play?"

"Padel? Nah. I suck at sports."

"I could teach you," she said. "If you want."

The September sun filtered through the palm fronds as Mateo nodded. Yeah, he definitely wanted.
