Sphinx in the Lightning
Maya's palms were sweating so much she could practically water the plants with them. She clutched her phone behind the lone palm tree at Tyler's beach party,同时在spying on his Instagram stories from three weeks ago. Pathetic? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely.
The ocean water lapped at the sand twenty feet away, but Maya was stuck in social paralysis zone. Across the party, Skylar held court — the human Sphinx of sophomore year. Beautiful, mysterious, rumored to be bisexual, and impossible to read. Skylar who'd looked at Maya in homeroom yesterday for exactly 2.3 seconds, sending Maya into this spiral.
"You're literallybehind foliage," her best friend Jax materialized, holding two sodas. "Not your vibe, bestie."
"Shut up," Maya hissed. "I'm conducting important research."
"On what? The optimal angle to observe your crush without being flagged as a total creep?"
"First of all, I'm not spying. I'm... gathering intel." Maya wiped her palms on her cutoffs. "Second, Skylar's not my crush. They're an enigma I'm attempting to solve."
"Same energy," Jax said, handing her a soda. "You know what solves enigmas? Talking to them. It's revolutionary tech, very cutting edge."
Before Maya could roast Jax back, the sky went purple-white.
Lightning cracked directly overhead. Someone screamed. Rain dropped like the sky was trying to drown them all.
Everyone scrambled toward the beach house. Except Skylar, who was standing near the water's edge, pulling something from their pocket — a small sphinx statue, weirdly specific, but they seemed to be talking to it like it was a person.
Maya's feet moved before her brain could overthink. She ran through the downpour, hair plastering to her face, until she was beside Skylar.
"You're gonna get electrocuted," Maya shouted over the thunder.
Skylar looked up, rain dripping down their nose, eyes bright even in the storm. "My brother gave me this before he left for college. Said sphinxes guard secrets." They held up the tiny statue. "I talk to it when I'm nervous."
"You get nervous?"
"All the time." Skylar's laugh was barely audible over the rain. "Especially around certain people."
Lightning flashed again. For a second, everything was white.
"Maya, right?" Skylar asked.
Maya's palms stopped sweating, finally. "Yeah."
"Cool." Skylar grinned. "Wanna get electrocuted together?"
And just like that, the Sphinx's riddle wasn't so scary anymore. Some answers weren't found in the spying, but in the storm — reckless and wonderful and absolutely worth the risk.
