Sphinx in the Hallway

Maya stood frozen in front of her mirror, iPhone clutched like a lifeline. Her mom had called her stubborn as a bull that morning, but Maya knew the truth: she was just scared.

"You need this vitamin D supplement," her mom had said, pressing the bottle into her palm. "It'll help with everything."

Everything, right. Like how Maya had been crushing on Alex since September but hadn't managed more than three awkward sentences. Like how the sphinx emoji stared back at her from her phone screen—mysterious, ancient, knowing.

The hallways of Northwood High felt like an endless series of riddles she couldn't solve. Who sat where. Who dated who. Who was secretly crying in the bathroom third period. Maya tried to decode them all, but she always came up short.

"Hey."

The voice made her jump. Alex, standing there with that half-smile that made her stomach do gymnastics.

"Hey," Maya managed, her voice barely a whisper.

"I like your jacket," Alex said. "It's... bold."

Bold. Not weird, not too much. Bold.

"Thanks," Maya said, actually smiling this time. "My grandma got it for me. She's pretty fearless."

"That's cool." Alex leaned against the lockers. "So, I was wondering—"

The moment stretched like lightning about to strike. The air between them crackled with possibility.

"—if you wanted to study for the history test together? Friday?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. Friday. As in two days from now Friday. As in actual plans with Alex Friday.

"Yeah," she said, and it came out confident, like she'd known the answer to this riddle all along. "That would be awesome."

"Great," Alex grinned. "Here, put your number in my phone."

As Maya typed her number, she thought about sphinxes and riddles and how maybe the answers weren't as complicated as she'd made them out to be. Maybe you didn't have to solve everything all at once. Maybe you just had to be brave enough to ask.

Her phone buzzed later that night. A text from Alex: Can't wait for Friday :)

Maya flopped onto her bed, heart doing somersaults. Maybe her mom was right about the vitamins, but Maya knew the real cure for everything was just showing up, even when you're scared.

Even when you feel like a bull in a china shop.

Even when every riddle seems impossible.

Especially then.
