Sphinx in the Dugout

Maya's palms were sweating—like, actually dripping. First date jitters were real, but this wasn't even a date. Just taco Tuesday with the baseball team after their victory against Central.

"You good, Martinez?" Liam asked, sliding into the booth beside her. His hair was still damp from the post-game showers, smelling like coconut and confidence.

"Yeah. Just... you know." She wiped her hands on her jeans. "First time hanging with the squad. Feels like I'm trying out all over again."

Outside, lightning flashed, illuminating the parking lot. The storm had been brewing all afternoon, matching the knot in Maya's stomach. She'd made varsity as a sophomore, but that didn't mean she belonged.

"Try this." Liam pushed a bowl toward her. "Spinach artichoke dip. Life-changing."

Maya stared at it like it was radioactive. "I don't do green stuff."

"That's the problem, Martinez. You're scared of everything." He smirked. "Try it, or I tell everyone you still sleep with a nightlight."

"I DON'T—"

"Then prove it."

She dipped her chip, took the tiniest bite. And... okay, it wasn't terrible. Actually kind of amazing. Liam watched her, looking weirdly proud, like she'd just hit a home run instead of consuming vegetables.

"See? Growth." He raised his soda. "Anyway, I wanted to ask—"

The door flew open. Jen Carter marched in, sphinx-like in her perfect calculated silence. The girl who'd been flirting with Liam since preseason. Who had better stats, better hair, a better everything.

"Am I interrupting?" Jen's eyes locked on Maya.

Maya's stomach dropped. Strikeout. Complete and total.

"Nah," Liam said, surprising her. "Maya was just teaching me about being brave enough to try new things." He grinned at Maya. "Right?"

She blinked. He was making it sound like SHE was the one showing HIM something. Flipping the narrative.

Jen's expression faltered for a split second. A crack in the sphinx mask.

"Yeah," Maya found herself saying. "Exactly."

Another lightning strike illuminated Jen's confusion, Liam's barely-contained laughter, and Maya's sudden realization: maybe she didn't need to prove she belonged. Maybe she just needed to realize she already did.
