Sphinx Hat Summer

The cable stretched across the backyard like a judgment line, separating the cool kids from the awkward ones. Maya stood on the wrong side, clutching her plastic cup of lukewarm soda, feeling like a fraud in her own skin.

"Hey, Sphinx!" Tyler yelled, sauntering over with that easy confidence that made Maya's stomach do flips. "Love the hat by the way. Very... mysterious."

Maya's hand flew to the oversized sphinx hat she'd thrifted as a joke, something to hide behind at parties. Now it felt less like armor and more like a sign that screamed 'I don't belong here.'

"Thanks," she managed, her voice barely carrying over the music. "It's... vintage."

"That's what's up." Tyler leaned in closer, and Maya could smell his cologne—something expensive and woodsy. "My cousin says you're, like, really good at swimming. Is that true?"

The question caught her off guard. Nobody at North Valley High knew about the 6 AM practices, the way water made everything else disappear, the scholarship applications she'd been secretly filling out.

"Yeah, I guess," she said, suddenly hyper-aware of the sphinx hat's ridiculous proportions. "It's just... something I do."

"That's bull." Tyler's grin softened. "I've seen you at the community pool. You're crazy fast. We could actually use someone like that on our relay team."

Maya felt herself swimming in uncharted territory. Tyler Evans, captain of everything, was inviting her into his world? The same Tyler whose friends had made her feel invisible since freshman year?

"Wait, seriously?"

"Dead ass." He pulled out his phone. "Here, put your number in. Coach has been begging for a butterfly specialist, and you've got that form down cold."

As she typed, Maya caught sight of herself in the sliding glass door—sphinx hat slightly askew, fake confidence replaced by something real. For the first time all night, she wasn't hiding.

"So about the hat..." Tyler started, eyes twinkling.

"Don't." Maya laughed, actually laughed. "If you're gonna be on my relay team, you don't get to roast the sphinx. That's, like, in the bylaws now."

"Deal." He held up his cup for a toast. "To sphinx hats and swimming fast?"

"To finally taking this stupid thing off," Maya said, pulling off the hat and letting her hair spill free. "And to whatever comes next."
