Sphinx Girl Secrets

dogcatsphinx

Jamila moved through Hamilton High's hallway like she was invisible, which was exactly how she liked it. At 16, she'd mastered the art of fading into the background while her phone blew up with drama from the friend group she'd drifted away from. Sometimes she felt like their loyal dog, always waiting to be called back, but today she was done.

The principal's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Jamila, we need you in the main office."

Her stomach dropped. The school's emotional support cat, a fat tabby named Mrs. Whiskers, had escaped again. Jamila had somehow become the unofficial cat whisperer freshman year when she'd calmed the cat down during a lockdown drill.

She found Mrs. Whiskers perched on top of the lockers like she owned the place. A crowd gathered. Jake, the cute sophomore she'd been low-key crushing on, leaned against the nearby door.

"Yo, you're like a cat sphinx or something," he said, grinning. "Mysterious and good with animals."

Jamila's face burned. "That's not really a thing."

"It could be." His eyes crinkled. "Hey, are you going to Chloe's party tonight?"

The question hung between them like possibility. Jamila had been invited—everyone had—but she'd planned to stay home and watch Netflix, like usual.

"Maybe," she said, climbing down with Mrs. Whiskers purring in her arms. "If someone cool invites me."

Jake's smile widened. "Consider yourself invited, sphinx girl."

That night, Jamila showed up wearing her brother's vintage jacket and feeling like she might throw up. But when Jake spotted her and immediately made his way over, something shifted. She wasn't background anymore. She was the girl who could handle escaped cats, who made cute boys notice her, who maybe had secrets worth knowing.

"Sphinx girl," he said, handing her a soda. "You actually came."

"Told you I might." Jamila smiled, and it felt real. "If someone cool asked."

The old friend group watched from across the room, but Jamila didn't care. She was done being their dog, done waiting for scraps of attention. Tonight, she was the one with secrets, the one they'd try to figure out. And honestly? That felt pretty good.
