Sphinx Cat Saves The Night
Maya's braces had become her personal spinach magnet. She'd spent the entire party avoiding the spinach puffs, which was unfortunate because they were literally the only vegan option besides stale tortilla chips. Her best friend Leo had already abandoned her for the karaoke machine, leaving Maya stranded by the punch bowl like some kind of social sphinx, guarding its lonely post.
"Hey, nice sphinx pose," said a voice behind her. "You've been standing there contemplating the meaning of life for approximately ten minutes."
Maya turned to find Jordan—that quiet goth kid from her English class holding a cup of fruit punch. They'd had exactly two conversations since school started, both about mandatory reading assignments.
"I'm not contemplating," Maya said, immediately defensive. "I'm guarding. This punch bowl from people who don't appreciate its fruity excellence."
Jordan's lip piercing glinted as they smiled. "Admirable. Very noble." They nodded toward the snack table. "You should try those spinach puffs. Everyone's saying they're mid, but I think they're kinda giving."
Maya hesitated. "I can't. My braces are basically a spinach magnet. It would be a whole situation."
"Wait." Jordan's eyes widened. "You have braces and you've been surviving the snack table massacre without getting trapped? That's literally legendary."
Before Maya could respond, Leo stumbled over, shouting off-key lyrics, and accidentally knocked into a server carrying a tray of—inevitably—spinach puffs. Green spinach scattered everywhere like some kind of culinary confetti.
A sphinx cat—Maya hadn't even known anyone HAD a sphinx cat—darted out from under a table and started eating the fallen spinach.
"That's literally the most unhinged thing I've ever witnessed," Jordan whispered.
Maya started laughing so hard she snorted, which was mortifying, but Jordan was laughing too, and then Leo was laughing despite having spinach on his shirt, and suddenly the sphinx cat was rubbing against Maya's ankle like they were best friends.
"So," Jordan said, once the chaos settled. "Want to go inspect the damage outside? Away from the spinach danger zone?"
"Yes," Maya said. "Absolutely."
And just like that, Maya had something better than a successful party navigation. She had a new friend, a story she'd never live down, and a weird interaction with a sphinx cat that would become their inside joke for years to come.
