Sphinx by the Pool

Maya stared at the cafeteria tray, pushing the soggy **spinach** around her plate with plastic determination. It was day three of her 'new Maya' reinvention project — vegan, confident, totally unbothered by the fact that she'd just moved across the country two weeks into sophomore year.

'You gonna eat that, or are you having a staring contest with your lunch?'

Maya looked up. It was Leo from her English class, the guy with the perfect curls and the kind of easy confidence that made everything look effortless. He was grinning like she'd just been caught doing something embarrassing. Which she kind of had.

'It's aggressively green,' Maya admitted. 'I think it's judging me.'

Leo laughed — actually laughed, not one of those polite half-smiles people gave when they didn't know what to say. 'That's because it knows you're thinking about the **pool** party tonight.' He slid into the seat across from her. 'Everyone's talking about it. You going?'

Maya's stomach did that horrible flutter thing. 'I wasn't invited.'

'That's because it's at Jenna's house and you're, what? The new girl?' Leo shrugged. 'Jenna's nice. Mostly. She's just... a lot.' He leaned in. 'Here's the thing about Jenna — she loves an entrance. You show up, you act like you belong, you're in.'

'Because that's not terrifying advice at all.'

'Maya.' Leo's voice dropped, suddenly serious. 'You've been sitting in the back of English for two weeks looking like you're solving ancient riddles. You've got total **sphinx** energy. Mysterious. Intense. People are curious about you.' He smiled. 'Use it.'

Maya felt something shift in her chest. Sphinx energy? Was that good? Was he flirting, or just being weirdly helpful?

Later that night, Maya stood at the edge of the **pool** in her one-piece swimsuit, watching **water** ripple under the pool lights. Someone had pushed a flotation device too close to the jets, and it bobbed against the current in a way that felt metaphorical. Jenna's mom had set out an impressive spread — including a spinach dip that Maya had apparently already judged from a distance.

'So! New girl!'

Maya turned. Jenna stood there, surrounded by her people, eyes bright with something that wasn't quite friendly but wasn't quite hostile either. Testing.

'Maya,' she said, and then she remembered Leo's voice in her head. 'And I'm not actually new. I'm just... selectively under-the-radar.' She raised her cup. 'Until now.'

Jenna blinked. Then smiled — a real one. 'Okay. I see you.' She gestured to the pool. 'Get in. The **water**'s perfect.'

Maya slipped into the pool, and for the first time in two weeks, she didn't feel like she was underwater. She felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
