Sphinx by the Pool
Maya pulled her bucket hat down low, practically hiding her entire face. The last place she wanted to be was Jessica's annual summer pool party, but her mom had insisted she needed to 'get out there.' Maya stood by the fence, clutching her phone like a lifeline, watching everyone else through the gaps.
"Hey, you're not gonna swim?" A voice appeared beside her. She looked up to see Dev, the guy from her history class who drew sphinxes and mythological creatures in the margins of his notes. He wore the same black hoodie every day, like a uniform.
"Nah, I'm good," Maya muttered. "Just here for the vibes."
"Me too," Dev said. "I'm basically a professional party spy at this point. Just observing the ecosystem."
Maya laughed, surprised. "Is that what we're doing? Spying?"
"Absolutely. Look at Tyler over there." He pointed toward the diving board where the most popular guy in their grade was attempting a ridiculous handstand that ended in an epic splash. "That's swimming-ish behavior."
"That's chaos," Maya corrected.
"Same difference."
They spent the next hour making up backstories for everyone there. The sphinx in the garden became the guardian of forgotten crushes. The floating pool noodles were ancient artifacts. For the first time all summer, Maya felt like she could actually breathe around people her age.
"You know," Dev said, pushing his wet hair back, "you're way cooler than you let yourself be."
Maya felt her face get hot. "You think so?"
"I know so." He stood up. "Wanna spy from the diving board? Better view."
She hesitated, then took off her hat. The water glittered below them, and suddenly, being the new girl who didn't know how to fit in didn't feel so impossible anymore. "Yeah," she said. "Let's do it."
Some days are just about finding your sphinx — that one person who sees past the disguise and reminds you that you don't have to perform to belong. You just have to show up.
