Sphinx Behind the Cable Box
Maya's cleats dug into the dirt behind the abandoned cable building, her secret spot. The rusted cable box leaned against the wall like a forgotten monument, perfect for storing her gear. Her golden retriever, Buster, nudged her hand with his wet nose, sensing her jitters.
"You got this, girl," she whispered, more for herself than the dog.
Tomorrow was the baseball tryouts. The ones her parents thought were tutoring sessions. The ones that could get her kicked off the honor roll, which would basically be a family crisis.
Buster barked at something in the alley. Maya followed his gaze and froze.
Someone had spray-painted a sphinx on the cable building's wall. Not the Egyptian kind—this sphinx wore a baseball cap, its riddle painted in bubble letters: WHAT DO YOU CALL SOMEONE WHO CHASES DREAMS THEIR PARENTS CAN'T SEE?
Maya stared at it, heart pounding. She'd been running from this conversation for months.
Her phone buzzed. Mom: Study group going late? Everything okay?
Maya typed: Yeah. Physics is killing me.
She lied. She'd been here instead, practicing her swing until her arms burned, because for the first time in her life, something felt real. Not the AP classes her parents bragged about, not the piano lessons she'd faked enjoying for years. Baseball.
Buster whimpered, leaning against her leg. Maya buried her face in his golden fur. The sphinx's riddle echoed in her head.
What do you call someone who chases dreams their parents can't see?
Brave. Or maybe just selfish.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, it was Chloe from the team: Tryouts tomorrow. Don't overthink it. You've got this.
Maya typed back, hitting send before she could chicken out: I'll be there.
The sphinx seemed to grin at her. Buster barked approval. Maya grabbed her bat, took one more swing, and finally felt like herself.
