Sphinx at the Deep End

Maya clutched her iphone like a lifeline, thumb hovering over Instagram as her bestie Chloe dragged her toward the community pool. The annual end-of-summer bash. Every popular kid from Northwood High would be there, and Maya's anxiety was doing backflips.

"You're literally spiraling," Chloe said, grabbing Maya's phone. "No more doomscrolling. We're gonna have fun or die trying."

The pool deck was already packed. Jake—that gorgeous senior with the sphinx tattoo curling around his left bicep—was holding court at the deep end. Maya had been lowkey obsessed with him since sophomore year, when he'd asked to borrow a pencil in chem and their fingers had brushed.

"Truth or dare!" someone shouted. A circle formed near the diving board. Jake locked eyes with Maya across the water and crooked a finger. Her stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organ.

"Truth or dare, Maya?" His voice was all rough edges and confidence.

"Truth," she squeaked.

He smirked. "What's the most embarrassing thing on your phone?" Her iphone burned in her hand. The screenshots of his Instagram? The fanfic she'd written about them meeting at a coffee shop and falling in love? The voice notes practicing conversations they'd never have?

"Can't answer that," she said, cheeks flaming. "I plead the fifth."

"Then you gotta jump," Jake said. "Bear witness to the deep end."

"What?"

"Swimming. In the deep end. Fully clothed." Someone wolf-whistled. Maya's heart hammered. But then she saw it—the hint of vulnerability behind Jake's eyes. The sphinx-like mystery wasn't cruelty. It was invitation.

She stripped off her sandals and cannonballed into the blue. Water swallowed her scream. When she surfaced, dripping and breathless, everyone was cheering. Jake was grinning.

"You're a legend, Maya Chen," he called.

Later, dripping wet by the snack table, her iphone safely tucked away in her bag, Maya realized something: the deep end wasn't as scary as she'd thought. And Jake? He was just a guy who liked girls who could take a plunge.

Best summer ever. No filter needed.
