Sphinx at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, chlorine stinging her nose. The popular kids' pyramid of red Solo cups towered by the diving board, a hieroglyphic monument to teenage excess she'd spent all week low-key obsessing over.

The **water** looked like liquid anxiety.

Across the deck, Kai—her former best friend turned middle school ghost story—laughed at something someone said. They hadn't spoken since The Incident (which wasn't even dramatic, just Maya choosing different electives and their mutual silence spiraling into something neither could figure out how to undo).

Then she spotted Leo's older sister, perched on an inflatable lounge like some suburban **sphinx**. Raven-haired, impossibly cool, watching everything with these eyes that seemed to know exactly who didn't belong.

"You look like you're calculating escape routes."

Maya jumped. The sphinx had swum over.

"I—"

"Jordan. Leo's sister. And you're Maya, right?" She nodded toward the drink pyramid. "Don't let that intimidate you. It's just sugar and bad decisions."

"I wasn't—"

"Sure." Jordan's lip twitched. "Look, Maya, here's something nobody tells you about high school: it's all performative. Everyone's faking it. Even Kai over there?" She lowered her voice. "Asked Leo three times if you were coming."

Wait.

"But—"

"The world won't end if you say hi first. That's the pyramid scheme of teenage drama: someone has to break the cycle."

The word choice was so random it actually worked. Maya found herself moving toward Kai across the deck, her heart pounding like a bass line.

"Hey."

Kai's eyes widened. Then, almost imperceptibly, they relaxed. "Hey. I was hoping you'd show."

Later, floating under the stars while Jordan texted someone who probably went to college (she was ancient, like twenty), Maya realized something profound: sometimes the scariest sphinxes were just regular people waiting for someone else to make the first move.
