Sphinx and the Sweet Spot

Maya's palms were sweating — again. She wiped them on her jeans, leaving dark streaks on the denim, but her crush Jake was walking toward her in the cafeteria, and suddenly her armpits were deciding to join the party. Great. Just great.

The night before, she'd done something impulsive. After her mom said "maybe layers would look nice" for the hundredth time, Maya grabbed scissors and went full mullet. Business in front, party in back, chaos everywhere. Now her hair stuck up like she'd been electrocuted, and Jake was three feet away.

"Hey," he said. "Love the... vibe."

Vibe. The universal code for "I don't know what to say about that thing."

"Thanks!" she said, her voice cracking. "Just experimenting."

"Cool. We're all heading to the carnival later. You coming?"

The carnival. Where she'd have to socialize. With her hair. And her sweating palms.

"Yeah!" she said too enthusiastically.

Later that night, she found herself standing before the cheesiest attraction: a plastic sphinx painted fluorescent yellow, its smile crooked, one eye slightly higher than the other. "Answer the riddle, win a prize," a bored teenager announced from inside the booth.

The sphinx's riddle turned out to be: "What grows when you take away?" Maya stared at it, running through possibilities while her friends waited. A hole? A grave? Her patience?

"A hole," she said finally.

"Correct."

She won a stuffed unicorn with three legs.

"Nice," Jake said, appearing beside her. "Wanna ride the tilt-a-whirl?"

"Sure!"

As they waited in line, her palms stopped sweating. Maybe the hair was a lot. Maybe she'd fix it tomorrow. But right now, she was running toward something instead of away, and that felt like winning.

"Your hair's actually kinda badass," Jake said.

Maya grinned. The sphinx had nothing on this riddle: figuring out who she was becoming, one questionable haircut at a time.
