Soggy Spinach Incident

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The water glittered tauntingly beneath the fairy lights, and inside her flip-flops, her palms were basically swamps.

"You're not actually gonna stay in that hoodie all night, are you?" Chloe asked, popping up beside her. Chloe, who had been Maya's best friend since seventh grade, back when matching scrunchies counted as a personality trait. Now Chloe was off with the popular crowd, leaving Maya to awkward hover at the perimeter of her own life.

"Maybe," Maya muttered. "It's... atmospheric."

"Riiight." Chloe rolled her eyes, but there was something softer underneath. "Hey, Tyler's been looking at you all night."

Tyler. The human equivalent of a golden retriever puppy. Maya had watched him from across AP Bio for months, memorizing the constellation of freckles across his nose. But her crush on him was basically theoretical, like Schrödinger's cat but with more panic attacks.

Then she saw it: the buffet table. And next to the chips, a giant bowl of fresh spinach. Some wellness mom had clearly hijacked the party planning.

Maya's brain, in its infinite wisdom, decided: If I eat spinach, I'll look healthy and sophisticated. Tyler will appreciate a girl who takes care of herself.

She grabbed a handful and shoved it in her mouth before her frontal lobe could intervene.

"Whoa, someone's committed to their greens," someone laughed.

Maya spun around to face Tyler, who was standing WAY too close. His eyes were amused, crinkling at the corners. She tried to smile back, but spinach does NOT smile well. A piece escaped her teeth and cascaded down her chin in what felt like slow motion.

"I—" she started, then made the executive decision to bolt toward the pool.

She didn't mean to fall in. But apparently Newton's laws don't care about your dignity.

The water swallowed her whole. When she surfaced, sputtering and spinach-stained, the whole party had gone quiet. Except Tyler. He was doubled over laughing, but not mean-laughing. The kind where you can't breathe because something is actually hilarious.

"I think there's still some spinach in your hair," he called out, grinning.

Maya's life was over. She was going to have to move to Antarctica and live among the penguins.

Then Chloe jumped in. Splash.

"Spinach hair is gonna be next semester's aesthetic, I'm calling it now," she declared.

"Bear with me," Tyler said, extending a hand from the pool edge. "I promise I'm not usually this chaotic."

Maya took it. His palm was warm and slightly calloused from climbing practice. And somehow, standing there dripping wet with lettuce in her hair, she realized that maybe perfect wasn't the point.

"Well," she said, squeezing his hand. "At least I got your attention."

"Oh, you got it," Tyler said, and something in his voice made the pool feel suddenly, wonderfully warm.

Later that night, Chloe texted her: "that was iconic. you're welcome."

Maya fell asleep with wet hair and a stomach full of chlorinated water and hope.
