Smoothie, Spark, Spiral

Maya's papaya-spinach smoothie sat on the cafeteria table like a radioactive science experiment. Her best friend Priya stared at it with genuine concern.

"You're really doing this detox thing? For homecoming?"

"It's supposed to be a glow-up, Priya. My skin is gonna look insane." Maya adjusted the black beanie she'd been wearing since seventh grade—the one that covered her curls and made her feel like someone who had her life together. Someone who didn't panic when Aaron from AP Chem looked in her direction.

Which he was doing. Right now.

Maya's heart started that frantic running-in-place rhythm, the one that happened way too often since she'd noticed how Aaron's laugh crinkled his eyes. She grabbed her smoothie and took a massive gulp to look casual and mysterious and totally unaffected.

Big mistake. The spinach had other plans.

"You've got—" Priya started, but it was too late. Aaron was already walking over, all easy confidence and dimpled cheeks.

"Hey, Maya." His voice was deeper than she remembered. "You coming to the game Friday?"

Maya smiled. She said something. She still didn't know what, exactly, because her brain was short-circuiting so hard she forgot basic English.

"Cool." He grinned. "You've got a little—" he gestured at his own teeth—"just so you know."

The walk home felt like running underwater, heavy and surreal. Priya was sympathetic but also losing it with laughter every thirty seconds. Maya pulled off her hat and let her curls spring free, something she hadn't done in public since freshman year.

"That's it," she said. "I'm done. I'm throwing out the smoothie. I'm burning the hat. I'm just going to be me."

"You mean... the person Aaron literally just talked to?"

Maya paused. "The person with spinach in her teeth."

"The person he still talked to anyway."

Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.

"Hey, this is Aaron. You left your hoodie in chem. Also, you're really funny when you're nervous. Just saying."

Maya looked at Priya. Priya looked at Maya.

"Okay," Maya said, putting her hat back on but tilting it differently. "Maybe the glow-up starts from within."
