Smoothie Disaster

Maya's palms were sweating so much she could practically fill a water bottle. Great. Just great. She was about to talk to him—Javier, the guy who'd been sitting three rows ahead in homeroom since forever—and her body was totally betraying her.

"You got this," whispered Chloe, her best friend since kindergarten, giving her a not-so-gentle shove toward the cafeteria table where Javier sat alone. "Just be casual. Ask about his Spanish project. Easy peasy."

Casual. Right. Maya grabbed her emergency snack from her bag—the little container of spinach and orange slices she'd packed because she was trying out this whole "healthy lifestyle" thing her mom kept pushing. In her nervous state, she somehow managed to fumble both onto the floor.

The orange rolled. It kept rolling. Like, literally across the entire cafeteria, bouncing off someone's shoe, and landing directly under Javier's table.

The spinach? Well, the spinach just kind of scattered everywhere because apparently physics had decided today was not her day.

Maya stood there, frozen. This was it. This was her peak high school embarrassment moment. She could feel everyone's eyes on her, could practically hear the incoming detention for making a mess. She considered faking a sudden illness. Maybe falling over dead. Anything to escape.

Then Javier started laughing.

Not mean laughing. Like, actual genuine laughing. He stood up, picked up the orange, and walked over to her. "Is this your way of asking me to lunch? Because honestly? The produce approach is bold. I respect it."

Maya's face burned. She could feel it turning approximately the same shade as the orange currently in his hand. "I—uh—"

"I'm Javier." He held out his hand, palm up. "And I'm guessing you're Maya? You sit behind me in English. I've been wondering when you'd finally say something."

Chloe was visibly vibrating with excitement beside her. Maya could practically hear the "I TOLD YOU SO" screaming that would happen later.

"Yeah," Maya managed, still kinda stunned. "That's me. The spinach girl."

"Spinach girl." Javier grinned. "Cool. Way better than being known as the guy who tripped over his own backpack yesterday. Twice."

They talked for the rest of lunch period. About everything and nothing. His weird obsession with vintage sneakers, her disastrous attempt at baking last weekend, how Mr. Harrison gave way too much homework. And somehow, the spinach-and-orange incident became their thing—their inside joke that started everything.

Later, when Chloe practically tackled her in the hallway demanding details, Maya just smiled, her palms finally dry. "Okay, so... maybe disasters aren't always bad."
