Smashed Papaya and Lightning Strikes

Maya stood at the edge of the padel court, her heart pounding like she'd just downed three espressos. This was it — regional qualifiers, and somehow she'd actually made the team. Never mind that she'd only started playing three months ago because her crush Jake mentioned he liked girls who played racket sports. Desperate? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely.

"You got this, May!" her best friend Priya called from the sidelines, dramatically waving a smoothie cup like she was conducting an orchestra. Maya's pre-tournament breakfast choice — papaya and spinach smoothie — was currently staging a revolt in her stomach. "Next time I'm letting you talk me into 'health kicks,'" she muttered, adjusting her grip on the racket.

Their opponents swaggered onto the court like they owned the place. The Lightning Squad, everyone called them. Upperclassmen with perfect hair and intimidingly coordinated warm-ups. Especially their captain, Chloe, who somehow made the school uniform look like designer athleisure and had already dated three guys Maya had secretly crushed on.

"First point to... LITTLE BEAR," the ref announced, using Maya's unfortunate middle school nickname that somehow followed her everywhere. Heat flooded her cheeks.

But then something clicked. Maybe it was the lightning that cracked dramatically across the sky — actual, real-deal weather lightning that sent everyone scrambling. Or maybe it was seeing Priya and Jake both losing their minds cheering when she returned a serve she definitely shouldn't have reached.

Suddenly, she wasn't thinking about Chloe's perfect ponytail or whether her papaya breath was noticeable. She was just playing. Hitting balls she couldn't explain later, moving like she'd been doing this forever.

"Little Bear's got claws!" someone shouted.

They lost, obviously. But Maya walked off the court grinning like an idiot, high-fiving Priya so hard they both ended up dramatically rubbing their hands. Jake actually looked impressed.

"Same time next week?" Maya called to Chloe.

The captain smirked. "Bring it, Bear."

Priya raised her smoothie in a toast. "To not embarrassing ourselves AND possibly gaining some dignity. Also, never drinking spinach again."

Maya laughed, her racket over her shoulder, walking taller than she had all year. Sometimes the lightning strikes were exactly what you needed. Even if you did lose.
