Smash Shot, Sweaty Palms

Jordan's hands were sweating through his grip on the padel racket. This was it—the moment he'd been overthinking all week. Playing padel with Mia and her squad at the country club his parents could barely afford.

"You got this, man," Tyler whispered, leaning against the fence. "Don't be a bear about it. Just play your game."

"Easy for you to say," Jordan muttered. "You're not the one trying to impress your crush while her friends watch like hawks."

Mia waved from across the court, her grin bright enough to power a small city. "Ready to get crushed, Jordan?"

"Bring it, Rivera."

Game on. The first few rallies were sloppy—Jordan's serve hit the net twice, Mia's returns went long. But then he found his rhythm. His friend Tyler had been training him for weeks, and it was paying off.

"That's what I'm talking about!" Tyler shouted from the sidelines. "Channel your inner bull! Charge the net!"

Jordan did exactly that, charging forward to smash a volley that Mia couldn't return. Point Jordan. He caught Mia's eye—she was actually impressed. The smallest smirk played on her lips.

Then it happened.

A scruffy orange cat darted onto the court, chasing a butterfly. Mia's friend Priya shrieked. The cat scrambled, claws slipping on the court, and bolted straight toward Jordan's bag.

"Hey!" Jordan lunged, abandoning perfect form. The cat knocked over his water bottle, sending liquid everywhere. The racquet flew out of his hand as he tried to catch it.

Everyone froze. Then Mia started laughing. Not mean laughing—real laughing.

"Oh my god," she gasped. "That cat just absolutely wrecked you."

The cat sat next to Jordan's bag, licking its paw like nothing had happened. Jordan's face burned. But then Mia was walking over, extending her hand.

"You're kinda cute when you panic," she said. "Wanna get boba after this? My treat. Since, you know, you sacrificed your dignity for that random cat."

Jordan's face was still burning, but now it was different. "Boba sounds perfect."

"Good." Mia grinned. "But just so you know—I'm still beating you next time."

"You wish, Rivera."

As they walked off the court, the orange cat followed, like it had adopted them. Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're the ones where a cat ruins everything, and somehow, that makes everything better.
