Smash Point at Midnight
Maya's palms were literally sweating through her grip on the padel racket. This was, without a doubt, the most cringe moment of her sophomore year — which was saying something, considering she'd once accidentally called her teacher "mom" during attendance.
"You got this!" Liam called from across the court. Of course he was already shirtless, playing padel like it was his job and not just a casual Tuesday hang with the new girl. His golden retriever, Buster, barked enthusiastically from the sidelines, because apparently even the dog knew Maya was about to humiliate herself.
The ball came at her, and she swung.
Connected.
It sailed past Liam's outstretched racket and hit the back wall with a satisfying THWACK.
"No WAY!" Liam's eyes went wide. "Since when do you ball out like that?"
Maya shrugged, trying to look chill instead of like her heart was doing cartwheels. "Since I watched, like, fifty tutorial videos last night because I didn't want to flop in front of your whole squad."
They ended up playing for hours until the court lights flickered off at closing. Walking home, Buster trotting between them, something shifted. The conversation veered from casual school gossip to real talk — about how much pressure they felt to constantly be "on", how social media made everything performative, how neither of them actually liked half the people they pretended to vibe with.
"My place?" Liam asked suddenly. "My dad's out of town. We can order food."
Maya's stomach did that nervous flutter thing. This was it — the moment every teen movie hyped up. But when they got there, reality was way more chaotic than cinematic. His cat, Mittens, immediately bolted from somewhere and attacked Buster's tail. Chaos ensued.
Maya spent the next twenty minutes helping Liam separate a hissing cat from a whining dog, both of them laughing so hard they couldn't breathe. No romantic montage, no perfect kiss scene. Just fur everywhere, scratches on both their arms, and the realization that the guy she'd put on a pedestal was just a dork with chaotic animals who ordered way too much takeout and made terrible puns.
"Worst first hang ever," Liam said, wiping cat hair off his shirt. But he was smiling.
"Honestly?" Maya grinned. "Best."
