Smash Point

Leo stared at the padel court like it might swallow him whole. Three weeks into sophomore year, and he'd already perfected the art of being invisible—hoodie up, head down, sliding through hallways like a ghost. But somehow, clever Maya from his English group had talked him into joining the club's open play day.

"You'll be fine," she'd said. "I'll teach you."

Now here he was, holding a racquet like it was a foreign object, while Maya moved across the court with lethal grace. Her neon headband flashed like a warning sign.

Leo's goldfish, Bubbles, had more swagger than this. Back home, Bubbles ruled his five-gallon kingdom with flared fins and zero apologies. Meanwhile, Leo couldn't even serve without hitting his own shin.

"Focus," Maya called from the baseline. She'd already broken two of his serves. "You're thinking too loud."

Leo adjusted his beat-up baseball cap—same one he'd worn since seventh grade, brim permanently curved from anxiety-fueled adjustments. It was his armor. Under it, his hair did whatever it wanted. Under it, he could pretend to be someone else.

Then he saw it.

A fox.

Not a metaphor. An actual, orange-furred fox stood at the chain-link fence, watching them with amber eyes that seemed almost mocking. Leo froze. The racquet slipped from sweaty fingers.

Maya laughed. "That's Rusty. He lives in the woods behind the school. Thinks he's the coach."

The fox tilted its head.

"You going to let a fox critique your form?" Maya challenged, hands on hips. "Hit the ball, Leo."

Something shifted. Maybe it was the absurdity of a wild animal judging his athletic ability. Maybe it was Maya's grin, all teeth and zero judgment. Leo picked up the racquet, tossed the ball, and—

SMACK.

Perfect serve. The ball hit the back glass with a satisfying clink.

"Finally!" Maya whooped. The fox chuffed approvingly, then slipped into the woods like it had somewhere better to be.

Leo pushed his cap back, grinning so hard his face hurt. Bubbles would be proud.
