Sinking Into Real

Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, framing the perfect shot. The pool glittered behind her, blue and artificial as the filtered life she was performing. Everyone was watching—well, not everyone, but Lucas was across the deck, and that was enough.

She leaned over the edge, angling for the aesthetic. The phone slipped.

One horrified gasp, then—splash.

Her iPhone sank like a stone in the shimmering blue, Maya's dignity following close behind.

"No way," someone laughed. Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun. She scrambled to the edge, peering into the water, where her digital life was drowning.

"I got it." A hand reached past her. Lucas.

He fished out the phone, water dripping from his sculpted arms. His smile was crooked, almost genuine. "Maybe it needed a swim."

Maya's brain short-circuited. This was it—the moment to say something cool, something effortless and perfect and—

"Thanks," she squeaked. So much for effortless.

He handed it over, their fingers brushing. The contact electrocuted her nervous system. "You're at every party but I never see you actually party. Just ... phone work."

Maya shrugged, mortified. "Capturing the vibes."

"Or missing them," Lucas said softly.

Her pulse hammered. Was he—?

"Want a papaya?" he asked suddenly. "My mom's obsessed. It's actually lit."

Maya blinked. Papaya. Random, unexpected, weirdly perfect. "I've never had it."

"Your loss." He led her to the fruit platter, handed her a slice.

She bit into it. Sweet, strange, nothing like the filtered perfection she'd been chasing. Realer.

"Not bad," she admitted.

"Better than a photo," Lucas said, and his smile wasn't for Instagram anymore. It was just for her.

Maya looked at her waterlogged iPhone, then at Lucas. The perfect shot could wait. Some moments weren't meant to be captured. They were meant to be lived.
