Sink or Swim Sunday

Marcus stood at the edge of Chloe's pool, clutching his vitamin D supplement like it was some kind of magical shield. His mom had insisted he take it daily, but right now it felt more like a safety net for his fraying nerves.

"Yo Marcus, you gonna stand there all day looking like a bear about to hibernate?" Tyler called out, doing a cannonball that sent water spraying everywhere.

Marcus flinched. Tyler was exactly the kind of guy who made high school feel like one giant obstacle course. Confident, loud, always the center of attention. Meanwhile, Marcus was still getting used to his new braces and the way they made him self-conscious every time he opened his mouth.

The pool party was supposed to be chill. Just friends hanging before senior year started. But Marcus could feel the social dynamics shifting even before he'd jumped in. Chloe was floating on an inflatable flamingo, looking effortless. Her cat, Luna, was perched on a nearby lounge chair, watching everyone with judgmental eyes like she knew exactly who didn't belong.

"I'm good!" Marcus yelled back, his voice cracking slightly. Perfect.

He'd been running cross country since freshman year, but somehow that confidence evaporated when it came to pool parties. Swimming meant less clothing, more exposure, more opportunities to feel like the awkward kid he'd spent years trying to outgrow.

His phone buzzed. A text from his best friend: *Dude just get in the water. Nobody's looking at you.*

Marcus looked around. Actually, nobody was looking at him. Tyler was already challenging someone to a race. Chloe was laughing at something her friend said. Even the cat had closed her eyes, completely unimpressed by the entire production.

The vitamin bottle was still clutched in his hand. He suddenly realized how ridiculous he must look, fully dressed, holding a supplement bottle like a lifeline.

He dropped it on the towel. Took a deep breath. And jumped.

The water was shocking, perfect, refreshing. When he surfaced, Tyler grinned at him. "Finally! Now you're not just a bear, you're a swimming bear."

Marcus laughed. Maybe senior year wouldn't be so bad after all. Sometimes you just had to take the plunge.
