Sink or Swim Saturday
Maya stood at the edge of Jake Anderson's backyard, her stomach doing actual gymnastics. The **water** in his massive pool glittered with that perfect Instagram-filter blue, surrounded by way too many people from sophomore year.
"Earth to Maya?" Chen waved a hand in her face. "You've been staring at the chips for five minutes straight."
"I'm observing," Maya said, even though her palms were sweating. "It's called social intelligence."
"Your **hair** is going to be fine," Harper said. "You've fixed it three times since we got here."
Harper didn't understand. The humidity had declared war on Maya's curls, turning her carefully styled bun into a frizz situation of epic proportions. But that wasn't even the real problem.
The real problem was the invisible but very real social **pyramid** at Northwood High. Jake Anderson stood at the top—varsity swimmer, somehow humble despite being absolutely effortlessly cool. Maya occupied somewhere near the middle, occasionally drifting toward the bottom depending on the week.
Today felt like a bottom-of-the-pyramid kind of day.
"Alright, who's next?" Jake stood on the diving board, water dripping from his hair. "Show us what you got!"
His eyes found her. "Maya! You've been quiet all day. Your turn!"
The chanting started before she could process it.
"MAYA! MAYA! MAYA!"
Heat flooded her chest. Her hair was definitely going to explode into a frizz ball the second she hit the water. But backing down meant cementing her spot at the bottom of the pyramid forever. She'd be the girl who wouldn't even jump in a pool.
So Maya stood up.
Her legs felt strange as she walked toward the diving board. The **water** looked different from up here—deeper, more real somehow.
"Just jump?" she asked, hearing her voice shake.
She didn't wait for an answer.
Maya jumped.
The water rushed up, crashed over her, swallowed her whole. Then instinct kicked in. She kicked upward, broke the surface, gasped.
"UNDERDOG!" someone screamed.
The pool absolutely lost it. Jake started chanting it too. Harper was losing it. Even those random sophomore girls were smiling.
She swam to the ladder, hair plastered to her face, feeling ridiculous and amazing all at once.
"See?" Jake called from the diving board. "Knew you had it in you."
Maya flipped him off, but she was smiling too.
Maybe the pyramid wasn't as rigid as she'd thought. Or maybe she'd just found her own way to climb it—messy hair and all.
Either way, she'd take the win.
