Sink or Swim Moments
The chlorine smell hit Maya before she even saw the pool. Another summer of sitting on the sidelines while everyone else lived their best lives. She clutched her vitamin water like a shield, watching the popular crowd dominate the deep end. Liam, with his perfect diving form. Chloe, doing effortless laps that made swimming look like magic.
"Maya!" her mom called from the kitchen that morning, waving a container of green sludge. "Your spinach smoothie! You said you wanted to get healthy before sophomore year."
She'd said that. She'd also said she'd learn to swim properly instead of just bobbing in the shallow end like a terrified elementary schooler. So far, one smoothie down, zero progress on the whole life transformation thing.
The pool's cable system malfunctioned again—third time this week—leaving half the lanes with those annoying floating dividers. Liam pulled himself out of the water, droplets tracing down his arms like he was in some movie poster. He adjusted his goggles.
"Hey," he said, suddenly way too close. Maya's vitamin water almost slipped from her grip. "You coming in?"
"Just... hydrating," she managed, immediately wanting to die.
"Cool," Liam said. "We're doing laps if you want."
Later, floating in the shallow end with her spinach smoothie still digesting awkwardly, Maya realized something. Chloe wasn't perfect—she kept adjusting her swimsuit like she was self-conscious. Liam's diving form? He'd been practicing it all summer, failing repeatedly. They were all just pretending.
"Whatever," Maya whispered to herself, sliding into deeper water. "Fake it 'til you make it."
She kicked off from the wall, not gracefully, but moving forward. Sometimes growing up meant letting go of the shallow end and trusting the water would hold you up, spinach smoothie or not.
