Sink or Swim Moments

Maya stood at the edge of Chloe's pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The junior class kickback raged around her - Spotify blasting, seniors grinding on each other in the shallow end, someone doing cannonballs that splashed chlorine water everywhere.

"Hey, you gonna stand there all night or actually get in?" Leo materialized beside her, dripping wet, his hair plastered to his forehead. He was on varsity swim team, had that effortless confidence Maya could only dream of.

"I'm good," Maya lied, smoothie-stained teeth flashing in what she hoped passed for a chill smile. "Just... taking it in."

Truth was, she'd only come because her mom had gone full health-nut mode that week, forcing Maya to drink these vile spinach protein shakes before school. The green residue still clung to her teeth, and she'd been self-conscious all day.

Her phone buzzed. BUSTER ESCAPED AGAIN the home security alert screamed.

"No, no, NO," Maya groaned, already sprinting toward Chloe's front gate. Her elderly golden retriever, Buster, was basically a Houdini in dog form. Last time, he'd ended up three streets over at the elementary school playground.

"Need help?" Leo fell into step beside her, matching her running pace easily.

"Buster got out," she panted. "Again."

They found him two blocks down, happily wagging his tail at Mrs. Henderson's front door like he was about to sell her Girl Scout cookies.

As they walked back, Leo said, "You know, you should try out for swim team. You've got good form."

"What? No. I can barely swim laps without drowning."

"That's not what I saw when you were racing after Buster," he said. "You've got hustle. Besides, Chloe's been looking for someone to take over her spot since she's focusing on college apps."

They reached Chloe's house again. Everyone was gathering around the pool for the annual midnight swim - the night's main event.

"Come on," Leo said, grabbing her hand. "Just... trust me."

Something shifted in Maya's chest. She thought about Buster, how he never hesitated to explore new places even though he kept getting lost. How he'd greet anyone like a long-lost friend, tail wagging, zero shame.

She kicked off her flip-flops.

The water shocked her system - cold, electric, alive. For a second, she felt like she was drowning, then her body remembered. Stroke, breathe, stroke. The noise of the party faded into a muffled roar, bubbles trailing behind her like tiny constellations.

When she surfaced, Leo was grinning. "See? You're a natural."

Maya wiped chlorine from her eyes, heart racing in a way that had nothing to do with fear. For the first time all night, she wasn't watching from the edge.

"You're right," she said, diving back under. "This is way better than spinach."
