Sink or Swim

Maya stood at the edge of the **water**, her toes curling against the rough concrete. Tyler's annual end-of-school bash was in full swing, the backyard already packed with juniors she'd been going to school with for three years but barely knew. The pool glowed with underwater LED lights, casting wavering blue patterns across everyone's faces.

"Finally made it!" Chloe appeared beside her, clutching two red Solo cups. "Here, liquid courage."

Maya took the cup suspiciously. "What is it?"

"Fizzy **orange** soda. Your favorite." Chloe winked. "Mostly."

Maya sniffed it. Definitely mostly orange soda, but she detected something sharper underneath. Probably the cheap vodka someone's older sister had bought. She took a tiny sip anyway, because that's what you did when you wanted to belong.

"Great party, right?" Chloe nudged her. "Tyler looks especially hot this year."

Maya's stomach did that stupid flip-flop thing it always did when someone mentioned him. "I guess."

"Go talk to him!" Chloe insisted. "We're seniors next year. It's now or never, literally."

Before Maya could protest, Chloe disappeared into the crowd, leaving her alone with her orange courage and mounting anxiety. She took a larger gulp.

That's when she saw Tyler—wet, smiling, shaking water from his dark hair. He caught her eye and waved.

"Maya!" he called out. "Get in! The water's perfect!"

She stepped forward, heart pounding, and promptly slipped on wet concrete. Her orange drink flew, splashing across Tyler's chest in a sticky golden explosion.

The party went silent. Tyler stared, orange liquid dripping from his chin.

"Nice entrance," he said slowly, then burst out laughing. "I needed a shower anyway."

Relief washed over her. "I'm so sorry—"

"Maya!" someone shouted from behind her. "Catch!"

She turned just in time to see a plastic tub flying toward her. Instinct took over. She caught it—but the lid popped off, and she was suddenly coated in cold, creamy **spinach** artichoke dip.

The backyard erupted in laughter. Someone started chanting her name.

Tyler wiped orange soda from his chest, still grinning. "Okay, that was genuinely epic."

Maya stood there, covered in dip, sticky orange soda splashed across her crush's shirt, everyone laughing. She should have been mortified.

Instead, she started laughing too.

"Food fight?" Tyler raised an eyebrow.

"Food fight," Maya agreed, and before she could overthink it, she grabbed a handful of spinach dip and smeared it across his arm.

The backyard exploded. Someone threw a bag of chips. A water balloon soared through the air. Within minutes, everyone was wet, messy, and laughing harder than Maya had heard all year.

Later, sitting on the pool edge with Tyler, watching the sun rise, Maya realized something: perfection wasn't about smooth execution. It was about embracing the chaos and finding people who'd jump in with you.

"Hey," Tyler said, wiping spinach from his cheek. "You doing anything tomorrow?"

Maya grinned. "I might need to wash my hair. But after that? Totally free."

Sometimes, the best moments start with falling apart.
