Signal Lost in the Woods

Maya's thumb moved across her iPhone screen like it had a mind of its own, doom-scrolling through perfectly curated lives while her actual life happened somewhere outside the frame. The cabin rental was supposed to be 'super fun, best weekend ever,' but instead she felt like a zombie—dead inside, just going through the motions while her friends laughed around the bonfire without her.

'You coming in the water?' called Jake, that senior she'd been lowkey obsessed with since September. He was waist-deep in the lake, moonlight turning the ripples silver.

'Yeah, just one sec,' she lied, already knowing she wouldn't. The water looked cold anyway. She hunched deeper into her sweatshirt, the glow of Instagram stories reflecting in her eyes like a digital ghost story.

Then came the sound that made everyone freeze—not a twig snap, but something heavier. Something that didn't fit the soundtrack of teenage weekend vibes. A massive black bear emerged from between the cabins, moving with terrifying quiet.

Maya's phone slipped from her sweating palm. Time went into slow motion as it arced through the air, landing with a splash somewhere in the dark water. She didn't even scream.

The bear sniffed the air, looked at them with liquid black eyes, then lumbered off toward the dumpster like they weren't even worth noticing. But Maya was already running—not away from the bear, but toward the lake, wading in up to her knees, her hands frantically searching the cold darkness.

'You good?' Jake was beside her in the water, hand on her shoulder.

'My phone,' she choked out. 'Everything's on there.'

'Yeah,' he said softly. 'That's kind of the problem, isn't it?' And in that moment, with the water soaking her pajama pants and her friends gathered around and the bear somewhere in the distance, she realized he was right.

Maya stood up, water dripping from her hands, and for the first time in months, she didn't feel like a zombie at all. She felt terrifyingly, brilliantly alive.
