Signal Lost in the Storm

The rain hammered against Maya's window like it was trying to break in, but she barely noticed. She was too busy refreshing her **iPhone** for the hundredth time, even though she knew Max had already left her on read three hours ago. The **water** had started rising in the street outside, turning her Florida neighborhood into something that looked like the set of a post-apocalyptic movie.

"**Cable**'s out," her mom called from the living room. Maya groaned. Not that it mattered—she'd been doomscrolling through sad edits on TikTok anyway, mentally preparing herself to return to school on Monday as the girl whose situationship lasted exactly two weeks before Max decided he "wasn't ready for anything serious." Classic.

She felt like a **zombie**, honestly. Moving through her days on automatic, barely eating, definitely not sleeping properly. Her friends kept texting with reassurances that Max wasn't worth it, that he was mid anyway, but their words bounced off her like she was made of Teflon.

A palm frond crashed onto her roof—startling enough that she almost dropped her phone. **Palm** trees everywhere were surrendering to the wind, their usual beachy swagger completely gone. Maya pressed her phone against her **palm**, watching the battery percentage dip toward single digits.

And then—the signal died.

No WiFi. No data. Just her, alone with her thoughts and a hurricane that wasn't letting up anytime soon.

Something shifted. Maybe it was the silence. Maybe it was having nothing left to distract herself with. But Maya found herself actually looking out the window, really looking, at the way the water transformed everything she recognized into something strange and new.

Her phone buzzed one last time—a message from her best friend. "U alive??"

Maya typed back: "Barely. But I think I'm gonna be okay."

The storm was still raging outside, but for the first time in weeks, she could finally hear herself think.
