Signal Lost at Bear Lake
Maya's iPhone battery was at 4% when the first flash of lightning split the sky over Bear Lake.
"You guys, we have to get this on TikTok," she said, though the storm hadn't even fully broken yet. Her friends—sophomores, like her, but somehow still clueless about what mattered—were already setting up their shot. Hair checks. Angles. Fake candid laughter.
Maya checked her phone again. 3%. The group chat from Ethan had been blowing up all night. *u coming tomorrow?* *hello???* *?
She'd been flirting with him for two months and had somehow managed to turn it into absolutely nothing.
The storm hit hard around 11 PM. Thunder rattled the cabin windows. Rain slashed against the glass like it was trying to break in. Maya lay in her bunk, scrolling through old messages while her friends slept, feeling like she was missing something important happening somewhere else.
Then the power died.
Her phone screen went dark, and she was alone in the darkness with nothing but the sound of water dripping somewhere and the occasional distant rumble.
She grabbed a flashlight and slipped out the back door. The rain had slowed to a drizzle. She walked toward the lake, needing to feel something real. The water reflected what little moonlight broke through the clouds.
That's when she saw it—a black bear standing at the edge of the dock, just watching her.
Maya froze. Every instinct screamed to run, but she stood there, heart pounding so hard she thought it might burst. The bear tilted its head, almost curious. Then it turned and lumbered away, disappearing into the trees.
She stood there for what felt like forever, shaking with something that wasn't fear anymore. She'd never felt more alive.
The next morning, she found Ethan's messages still waiting. But instead of replying, she opened a new message to her mom:
*can you send paper and stamps?*
Some things were better written down.
