Signal in the Woods

Maya's iphone was dead. Again. She'd been scrolling until 3 AM, obsessed with whether Jake had left her on read, and now she was stranded at her cousin's house in the middle of nowhere with zero bars. The forest behind the property looked like something out of a fairy tale, which was exactly the kind of cringe comparison she'd never admit to making out loud.

She stepped onto the back porch, desperate for even one bar of service. That's when she saw it—a cat crouching in the tall grass, but something was off. Its movements were weirdly calculated, like it was stalking prey. Maya squinted. The cat's tail bushed out, ears flattened, and then she heard it: the distinctive yip of a fox.

The fox burst from the underbrush, ginger fur flashing like flame against autumn leaves. Maya's breath caught. She'd always loved foxes—something about their trickster energy, the way they existed between worlds. This one froze, golden eyes locking onto hers.

"No cap," she whispered, heart racing. "You're actually gorgeous."

The fox dipped its head, almost like a nod, then trotted toward the woods and paused. Looking back.

Maya hesitated. Her phone was useless anyway. What did she have to lose? She followed the fox through trees that filtered sunlight into patterns on her skin, past streams that murmured secrets, until they reached a clearing where her phone buzzed.

One bar.

She pulled out her iphone, and there it was: Jake's text. "Sorry, fell asleep lol. You up?"

The fox watched her, then slipped away into shadows. Maya stood there, grinning like an idiot, the woods suddenly feeling less like isolation and more like possibility. Maybe being disconnected wasn't the worst thing. Sometimes you needed to lose the signal to find what mattered.
