Signal in the Storm
Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, the glow illuminating her face in the darkness of the lake house porch. Thunder rumbled in the distance, but she kept filming, determined to capture the perfect TikTok of the approaching storm.
"You're literally going to drop that," Chloe said, her voice tight with something Maya couldn't quite read. "Come inside."
"In a second," Maya muttered, not looking up. "This content is gonna be fire."
Then lightning struck—a blinding flash that made everything go white. The smell of ozone hit Maya's nose as her phone slipped from her grasp, tumbling down the wooden steps toward the dark outline of trees below.
"No, no, NO!" she scrambled after it, heart pounding. The charging cable still dangled from her pocket like a useless tail.
Chloe was suddenly there, gripping Maya's arm. "Maya, stop."
"My phone—"
"Listen."
Maya froze. In the darkness, maybe twenty feet away, something moved. A massive shape, low and heavy. The unmistakable sound of breathing.
"Is that..." Maya whispered.
"Bear," Chloe breathed, her grip tightening. "Back. Slowly."
They inched backward toward the screen door, not daring to turn their backs. The bear huffed, lumbering toward something glinting on the ground—Maya's phone. It nudged the device with its snout, then lost interest, continuing into the trees.
The moment the door clicked shut behind them, both girls collapsed against it, shaking with laughter and adrenaline.
"Did that actually just happen?" Maya gasped, tears streaming down her face.
Chloe was laughing too, but her expression softened. "You could've gotten hurt, idiot."
"For a TikTok," Maya groaned, burying her face in her hands. "I'm actually brainrot."
"Yeah, you are." Chloe paused. "But... that was kind of epic?"
They sat up all night watching from the window, waiting for the bear to leave so they could retrieve the phone. By dawn, curled under blankets with cheap hot chocolate, Maya realized something: the best moments weren't the ones you posted. They were the ones you couldn't.
"So," Chloe said, pouring more cocoa. "Tomorrow we go get your phone? Together?"
Maya smiled, feeling something warm and real settle in her chest. "Together."
Some things were worth more than likes. Some things—like a friend who'd face a bear with you—were already viral in their own way.
