Shellfish and Sweet Fruit

waterdogpapayahat

Marcus stood by the backyard pool, clutching his phone like a lifeline. The water shimmered invitationally, but he'd already decided: no swimming today. Not when his legs looked like twigs next to everyone else's.

"You gonna stand there all day or actually socialize?" Maya appeared beside him, crunching on something orange and fleshy. "Try this. It's papaya."

Marcus eyed the fruit suspiciously. "Looks like alien goo."

"That's the point. Being weird." She grinned. "Besides, you need to stop lurking. It's giving major stalker energy."

He took a bite. Surprisingly sweet. "What if I mess up? Like, epic fail level mess up?"

"Then you mess up. We're fifteen. We're supposed to be awkward."

Suddenly, Chloe's golden retriever burst from the house, barking wildly. In seconds, the dog had splashed into the pool, creating chaos everywhere. People screamed, laughed, scrambled away. And there, floating tragically in the dog's wake, was a expensive designer hat.

"Oh NO!" Chloe shrieked. "My vintage hat!"

The dog paddled happily toward Marcus, who instinctively reached to help. But as he stepped forward, he caught his reflection in the patio doors—hat pulled low, shoulders hunched, hiding.

Something clicked.

Marcus stripped off his hat and tossed it onto a lawn chair. Then he dove into the water.

"Marcus!" Maya called, surprised.

He surfaced, sputtering but grinning. "What? It's just water."

The retriever swam over, tail wagging. Marcus grabbed the soggy hat and paddled back, depositing it dramatically at Chloe's feet.

"Your hat, m'lad." He bowed theatrically.

Chloe stared, then burst out laughing. "Okay, that was actually kinda legendary."

Maya popped another piece of papaya into her mouth. "Told you. Being weird works."

Marcus caught Maya's eye. They both smiled. The pool suddenly felt different—less like an exhibition of his insecurities, more like just... water. Just people. Just life.

"So," Maya said. "Wanna play chicken fight? I need a partner who won't bail."

Marcus laughed. "Only if I get to be on top."

"Deal."

He didn't even think about his legs. Some days, you just gotta jump in.
