Shallow Waters

The iphone glowed on the nightstand at 3 AM, illuminating her husband's sleeping face. Sarah reached for it—she didn't know why, exactly, except that something had been swimming beneath the surface of their marriage for months now.

Her finger found the notification. A text from someone named M: "Can't stop thinking about last night. The way you looked at me."

Sarah's breath caught. She read more. Messages stretching back weeks. Planning meetups. Deleting evidence. Her husband had been drowning her in bullshit while she'd been busy planning anniversary dinners, picking out paint colors, believing in the life they were building together.

She slipped outside. The pool water was cold—November cold—but she needed it. She'd been swimming competitively in college; the water had always been her sanctuary. Now she slipped into the dark, cutting through the silence with practiced strokes, her body moving on autopilot while her mind raced.

Lightning split the sky overhead, illuminating the backyard for a heartbeat. In that flash, she saw her friend Elena standing at the edge of the pool.

"You knew," Sarah said, treading water. Lightning flashed again. Elena's face was stricken.

"He told me last week. Said he was ending it. Said he wanted to fix things with you."

"And you didn't think I deserved to know?"

"I was trying to protect—"

"You were protecting him," Sarah said. "You always do."

The bull in the room—that's what her mother would have called it. The massive, obvious thing everyone pretended not to see. Elena had been in love with Sarah's brother for years, too fucked up about her own feelings to call out anyone else's.

Sarah pulled herself from the pool, water streaming from her skin like she was washing off the last decade of her life. She walked past Elena toward the house, toward the iphone still glowing on the nightstand, toward the conversation that would end her marriage but maybe, finally, allow her to start living.
