Shallow End, Deep Feelings

The social pyramid at Jefferson High had always been crystal clear until today. Me? I was somewhere in the middle - invisible enough to survive, visible enough to dread it.

"Pool party at Jake's," my best friend Priya had said. "You're coming. Non-negotiable."

Now here I was, standing by the edge of Jake's pool, clutching my iPhone like a lifeline. My thumbs hovered over the screen, desperate for a distraction. Any second now, someone would notice I was the only one not swimming. The only one fully dressed in cutoffs and a t-shirt while everyone else splashed in their swimsuits.

My mind flashed to my cat, Luna, probably napping on my bed - lucky her, no social situations to navigate. I should be home. I should literally be anywhere else.

"Hey, Maya."

I nearly jumped. Alex. The guy I'd been lowkey crushing on since September. The one who sat behind me in English and whose laugh I could pick out in a crowded hallway.

"You coming in?" He was already in the water, wet hair dripping, grinning like he actually wanted me to say yes.

"I don't have a suit," I said, which wasn't technically a lie. I had one. I just wasn't wearing it because putting on a swimsuit in front of people felt like walking into school naked.

"So? Jump in in your clothes. Everyone's done it." He splashed water at me - a tiny splash, playful. "Live a little, Maya."

Something in his voice made me look up. He wasn't making fun of me. He was... inviting me in. Into the pool. Into the moment. Into whatever this was.

Before I could talk myself out of it, I kicked off my flip-flops and jumped.

The shock of cold water hit me like a truth bomb. And then I was swimming - actually swimming, not awkwardly treading water or trying to look like I belonged. Just swimming.

When I surfaced, Alex was right there. "See? Not so bad."

"Yeah," I said, water dripping from my hair. "Not so bad."

Later that night, when I got home and checked my phone, I saw three texts from Alex. The last one said, "Today was fun. We should do it again."

I lay on my bed next to Luna, already planning my response. Maybe some risks were worth taking. Maybe the pool wasn't so scary after all. Maybe I'd been running from the wrong things all along.
