Shallow End, Deep Debt

The company Christmas party swirled around Elena as she stood by the pool's edge, nursing a lukewarm gin and tonic. Richard emerged from the water, droplets cascading down his toned torso, that boyish grin plastered across his face that had charmed investors and employees alike for the past decade.

"You're missing all the fun, El," he said, wrapping himself in a plush hotel towel. "Living dangerously tonight—I heard the VP of finance is asking questions about the Q3 projections."

Elena's stomach tightened. They'd been friends since business school, survived startups and heartbreaks together, but the water between them had grown murky lately. Richard had been borrowing from company accounts to cover gambling debts, a siphon that threatened to expose them both.

"The numbers are clean," she said, her voice steady despite the acid rising in her throat. "You worry too much."

Richard laughed, but his eyes darted toward the hotel entrance where a black sedan had just pulled up. "That's why you're the CFO. You see the world in balance sheets."

"And you see it in opportunities," Elena countered, watching two men in suits step from the car. Federal agents, unmistakable in their僵硬 postures.

The water beside them rippled in the evening breeze, reflecting the twinkling party lights—a facade of tranquility beneath which everything was about to shatter. Richard froze, his face draining of color.

"El, you didn't—"

"You had a choice, Richard. When you took that first skim, you decided whose pool you were swimming in."

The men approached across the deck as colleagues continued laughing, drinking, dancing, oblivious to the reckoning arriving at their sanctuary. Elena stepped back, distancing herself from the friend who'd become something else entirely—a liability, a betrayal, a reminder that even the deepest loyalties have their breaking point.

As they led Richard away, his eyes found hers one last time. The water lapped gently against the pool's edge, indifferent, as it always is to human dramas. Elena turned toward the party, toward the remaining guests who had no idea what depths lay beneath their celebration, and wondered if she'd ever truly be clean again.
