Seven Seconds of Brave

Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing the box dye through her hair. Midnight Temptation, the box promised. More like Midnight Disaster. The purple splotched uneven, like she'd tried to highlight it with a grape juice spill. Her phone buzzed — three Insta stories from Kai, looking perfect at sunset beach.

"Honey, dinner!"

Maya's stomach dropped. Her mom's experimental culinary phase had already brought them kale smoothies that tasted like lawn clippings. She washed out the dye, wincing as her scalp burned.

At dinner, her brother Leo was busy feeding his goldfish, Nemo, through the glass. "They have seven-second memories," he said, watching the fish dart. "Imagine that. Every seven seconds, a whole new life."

Maya poked at her plate. "What is this?"

"Papaya and spinach salad!" Her mom beamed. "It's superfood." The papaya sat like an alien organ next to wilted, slimy spinach that smelled like regret.

"I'm going to Kai's party," Maya said suddenly. Her fork clattered. "Tonight."

"With your hair like that?" Leo asked innocently.

Maya's phone lit up. Kai had posted: "party starts in 20!" Her hair was a disaster. She looked like she'd lost a fight with a highlighter. Her eyes burned.

"You know," her mom said quietly, "when I was your age, I dyed my hair blue. Your grandmother cried. I thought it was the end of everything."

"What happened?"

"I went outside anyway. And you know what? Nobody noticed. They were too busy worrying about themselves."

Maya looked at Nemo, circling his bowl, seven seconds of infinite possibility. She grabbed her phone, snapped a selfie with the ridiculous salad, captioned it: "midnight temptation part two: the papaya chronicles." Posted.

Her phone vibrated immediately. Kai: "lol that looks tragic. save me some?"

Maya smiled, grabbed a jacket, and headed out the door. Her hair was still terrible. The spinach salad was still a crime against humanity. But somehow, none of that mattered anymore.

Seven seconds. A whole new life. Every time she wanted.
