Sets and Shadows

The padel court echoed with the rhythm of their game—squeak of rubber, thud of ball, the sharp exhalation of effort. Elena across the net, hair escaping her ponytail, face flushed with something more than exertion. They'd been friends for seven years, since university, through bad breakups and career changes and that one terrible winter when Elena's mother died and Sarah slept on her couch for three weeks, bringing tea and silence in equal measure.

'Six-all,' Elena called out, wiping her forehead with the back of her hand. Her eyes met Sarah's across the net, and something shifted—not new, but newly acknowledged. The air between them had changed this week at the resort, charged with possibility and danger.

Later, they sat by the pool, legs submerged in the cool water. The sun was setting, painting the sky in bruises of purple and pink. Other guests had retreated to dinner, leaving them alone with the quiet lapping of water and distant laughter from the bar.

'Do you remember,' Elena said softly, 'that night in third year, when you asked why I never dated anyone seriously?'

Sarah's heart hammered. She remembered perfectly. She'd been half-drunk, reckless with wanting. 'I remember.'

Elena turned toward her. 'I wasn't ready then. But I think about it sometimes. That question.' She paused, and in the gathering dusk, a fox appeared at the pool's edge—lean and russet, eyes gleaming as it drank from the shallow end. They watched in silence, the moment stretching thin and precious.

'The fox comes here every evening,' Elena said finally, her voice low. 'I saw it yesterday. I thought—maybe it was a sign.' She reached out, her hand finding Sarah's in the water. 'Some things have been waiting a long time.'
