Serving Up Secrets

The papaya incident started it all. I was in the cafeteria, trying to look chill while dissecting the exotic fruit my mom packed, when Jordan walked by with his crew. Everyone else had turkey sandwiches. I had tropical vibes in a brown paper bag.

"What's that, bro?" Jordan asked, and I swear the whole cafeteria went silent. "Looks like something a fish would eat."

Everyone laughed. My face burned. That's when I decided I'd join the padel team – Jordan's territory, his domain. If I couldn't be cool naturally, I'd fake it till I made it.

My best friend Sam thought I was losing it. "Dude, you've never held a racquet in your life. This is embarrassing waiting to happen."

"Watch me," I said, with a confidence I absolutely did not feel.

First practice was a disaster. I tripped over my own feet, swung at empty air, and got pegged in the shoulder by Jordan's serve – which was definitely not an accident. "Sorry," he said, suppressing a smirk. "My bad, new guy."

But I kept showing up. Day after day. Because that's what you do when you're fifteen and desperate to prove you belong somewhere.

Then came the team sleepover at Jordan's house. That's when I became a spy. I'd gone to the bathroom and noticed Jordan's phone left unlocked on the counter. My fingers hovered. Should I? Could I? I opened his messages and saw the group chat:

"Should we cut the new guy? He's trying too hard."

"Yeah, it's kinda pathetic tbh."

My stomach dropped. All that effort, all those humiliating practices – and they were just waiting for the right moment to cut me.

I walked into Jordan's room instead of going back to the game room. His fish tank glowed in the corner. A single goldfish stared back at me through the glass, swimming in endless circles. That fish had it figured out – small world, safe borders, nobody expecting anything from it.

"You get it, huh?" I whispered.

The next morning, I quit the team. Sam high-fived me in the hallway. "Finally. That was cringe anyway."

"Yeah," I said, finally breathing. "Yeah, it was."

Sometimes the coolest thing you can do is walk away. Now I sit with Sam at lunch, eating whatever I want – papaya included – and I've never felt more like myself.
